Twitter: Kanye and Jay-Z rap about ninjas, SafeRide likes surprises
NU’s Twitter accounts were noticeably mum this week. Maybe students are finally interacting face-to-face. Or maybe you’ve all just focused your attention on the social network wonder that is Pinterest. Regardless, NU Tips gives good menu advice for our favorite Evanston diner and the Frisbee House parties hard. See what else is alive and buzzing, after the jump. more
Treat yourself to a new fit bod
The countdown to Spring Break has already begun, which has left us all wondering how we’re going to get into shape in record time. We’re all suffering from pastiness thanks to the endless cold and gloom, but if there’s one thing we can control it’s how fit we are come Spring Break. Believe it or not, there are ways to get slim and toned up for bikini season without becoming a gym rat. If you’re not the type who craves the treadmill or dumbbells, you may be interested in taking barre classes at Fit Girl Studio (1642 Maple Ave). more
Sleigh Bells returns with a vengeance
Sugar, spice, and everything nice; these were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect pop group. But Professor Utonium accidently added an extra ingredient to the concoction: hard rock ‘n’ roll. Thus the duo known as Sleigh Bells was formed. Using their ultra-cool music, Alexis Krauss and Derek E. Miller have dedicated their lives to fighting boring records and the forces of evil. more
A week of Presidents, beads, and “Moonshine”
What did we learn this week? For starters, saying “It’s for the kids,” can turn anything from sloppy and illegal into something philanthropic. Next, girls won’t actually do anything for Mardi Gras beads and Britney can be held accountable as the cause of binge drinking. Throw in some more life lessons and we’ve got ourselves a Party Report full of patriotism, (hospital) patients, and pole dancing. Full deets, after the jump. more
Pop trio “fun.” is the best thing to happen to Glee
Fox’s musical comedy Glee is infamous for producing lovable and friendly versions of top pop songs, from an entrancing male version of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” to a Spanglish Ricky Martin rendition of “Sexy and I Know It.” This made the decision to feature the practically unknown band fun.’s single “We Are Young” during an episode this season quite dubious. more
Pull yourself out of combat (boots)
The combat lace-up boot once screamed edgy, cool and unassuming. But the message becomes dull when every single pair of legs you bump into is yelling it at full volume. This offender is winter’s version of summer’s gladiator sandal – Limited Too probably has a version of it, which means it’s time to move on. On your hunt for the next best grungy thing, shop for shoes as you would for denim. Pay attention to the details – the overall shape, accessories and proportion – and most importantly, have fun while looking for a pair with a good combination of all three characteristics that personally speaks to you. Be sure to keep in mind that shoes are another opportunity to take a risk. Don’t let the plethora of designs out there go to waste; take full advantage of them. The next time you reach for a pair of boots they’d better be made for gawking. (See what I did there?) See what we’re talking about after the jump. more
Nerd-Hop for Northwestern
Jordan Looney, the Northwestern alumnus who once performed on Dillo Day, dropped a new mixtape right before Valentine’s Day titled Nerd-Hop Volume 3: Side B. The eleven-track mixtape is Looney’s fourth offering and we would like to say: It’s the best one yet. Rocking over a unique flavor of production, Looney’s raps celebrate life and talk about things that are easy to relate to. Looney’s strongest point is his delivery as he changes up his flow to fit each beat perfectly. more
Cheat on Burger King this weekend with swanky fine dining
After gorging yourself with the piles of discounted post-Valentine’s Day sweets scattered across your desk, it’s time to class it up and indulge in style. Get a taste of fine dining at this year’s Chicago Restaurant Week, an annual event in which 200-plus restaurants offer prix fixe menus for as low as $22. With restaurants ranging from Michelin star recipients to casual family-style joints, Restaurant Week provides the perfect opportunity to get your mastication on. Binge on a fancy three or four-course meal at some of Chicago’s swankiest restaurants without waking up the next morning with nothing but a flaccid wallet and a heart full of regret. Only $33 for sautéed foie gras, lobster risotto, and a chocolate soufflé? It won’t replace the dirt cheap goodness of $5 chicken fries, but I’ll take it. Check out the full details after the jump. more
Longboards journey back to the future with a hover
Christmas has come early for those of us waiting until 2015 to see the premonitions of Back to the Future come true. First, let’s take a trip back to six months ago when the mythical self-lacing NIKE MAGs were unleashed. Now picture Marty McFly escaping from his nemesis, Biff Tannen. Yep, it’s the hoverboard’s turn. Mattel is getting a head start on tomorrow’s technology by releasing full-scale replicas of McFly’s contraption that the sequel’s director always insisted was real. Prepare to out-swag that kid on Sheridan you raise your eyebrow to, but secretly envy because he is riding a Razor, the original kick scooter. Please though, don’t get your hopes up too high. more
Twitter: Campus Chalker not that indie, BK hungry for Rihanna’s ass
This week was full of attention-grabbing events. From the Grammy’s to Valentine’s Day, and everything in between, Northwestern Twitter accounts covered an array of topics. See what we’re retweeting, after the jump. more
