A week of Kings, cocktails, and mild disasters

All hail the three-day weekend.

Fratty antics are back, and no classes on Monday gave us an extra day to play. This week, Party Report catches up with a wall-scaling freshman, bouncer-dodging boys, and a party that includes MLK himself. Appropriate? Debatable.

Friday Night: Unintentional Spiderman party on Simpson
There’s nothing like a few stitches to prove that you had fun with your friends. After getting locked out of a party, a freshman clings to the side of a second-story balcony on Simpson. He attempts to scale the side of the building in true Jason Bourne-fashion, and it ends in a bloody mess. Wait, that’s fun, right?

Saturday Night: Kings off-campus
An off-campus house hosts a King-themed party in honor of the great MLK. Various costumed ‘Kings,’ from Larry King to a King Pin (yes, bowling!) spent the evening playing flip cup, beer pong and, naturally, kings. Conveniently the house is also fully equipped with a stocked bar, kegerator, and a beer vending machine, where pressing one button delivers an ice cold beer into one’s hand.

Saturday Night: Hello, pledge class party
A set of oh-so-clever frat boys hold a “Hello My Name Is” party to introduce its new pledge class. Partygoers are seen sporting the name plates “drunk,” “high,” and “wasted.” Not so creative, but points for honesty. The party doesn’t stray far from the tried-and-true Greek formula: sauna-like basement, mixed drinks and sloppy dancefloor hook ups. But then a freshman girl pauses the iPod (makeshift DJ) just as Britney Spears belts out “Gimme More,” and the crowd adamantly voices its displeasure. They may be frat bros, but they still like their Brit Brit.

Saturday Night: Concert in Wrigleyville
A group of four underage friends put on their most-hipster attire and venture to Metro Chicago in Wrigleyville for its Tomorrow Never Knows concert series. The turn-out for the show is small, but the experience is enhanced by the plastic bottle of 100-proof rum uncomfortably smuggled in by stuffing it down one individual’s pants. While the two girls of the group take shots in the restroom, the two guys decide to buy a coke and mix in the rum themselves — which ends quickly in a confrontation and run-around with two burly bouncers through the sparse crowd. Despite a rather lame plea attempt, the two are expelled and end up at a party down the road, while the remaining two girls meet one of the main acts and exchange numbers for a promised meet-up later.

Sunday Night: Cocktails on Garnett
Eleven signature drinks make for a wild party and even wilder hangovers. The hosts and hostesses of a cocktail party on Garnett encourage guests to wear something classy, and the theme of the party is adhered to surprisingly well, with nary a t-shirt in sight. Each host poured a specialty drink, ranging from the simple (rum and diet coke) to the downright supernatural (an electric, potent lime-green concotion). Before long, mixing drinks becomes too tedious, and partygoers are left to fend for themselves. The hard liqueur runs dry and the party empties out, but not before someone leaves a disgusting gift in the sink and two housemates engage in a fist fight.

Sunday Night: Defining Moments party
Two juniors celebrate their 21st with a party titled “Defining Moments,” wherein the guests are supposed to undergo life-changing experiences while intoxicated. In the process, all the memorable moments are quickly lost in a sea of PBR and indie rock. But we do remember the surprisingly elegant restroom that quickly loses its luster when one party guest ended up vomiting over the once-shining tiles.
