When new student productions debut, The Lip sits down with a player you may not know (but should).
Self-described geek Communications sophomore Jeff Meyer is quite a character. Literally. In what he calls, “a vicious cycle,” he has tackled roles across the spectrum of theater: a napkin in Beauty and the Beast, a gay tree in Wizard of Oz, a singer in Alice in Wonderland. Meyer, producer and graphic designer for the all male a capella group Asterik, livens performances with his hilarious antics and theatrical bravado. While not on stage, Meyer enjoys Will & Grace, Will Smith, and Lady Gaga. You can catch him performing with Asterik in their winter show, Inglourious Basteriks.
Asterik presents: Inglourious Basteriks will run Dec. 1 at 10 PM and Dec. 2 at 8 and 10pm in McCormick Auditorium in Norris and will feature the stand-up stylings of Dan Siegel and Evan Twohy. We sat down with Jeff to get the scoop on the show, a capella auditions, and the recklessness of senile nuns.
How does Asterik select the songs it performs? Group decision or leader-decided?
We staple the titles of the Billboard Top 40 to goldfish, then we take turns bobbing for them like apples.
What is your dream song to perform a capella?
“Wild, Wild West” by Will Smith; actually, anything by Will Smith.
Alternatively, what song would you hate to perform a capella?
Anything by Billy Ray Cyrus.
Wackiest thing that’s ever happened to you during a performance?
One time I sang at a retirement home for nuns, and a senile nun heckled me really loudly.
Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” or Lady Gaga’s “Disco Stick”?
You really can’t ask a gay man to reject anything by Lady Gaga.
What was the most terrifying part of your audition (for Asterik)?
Well, at callbacks, they threw us in a room with random props and gave us thirty seconds to make them laugh, but, don’t worry—I succeeded.
What would be your ideal career outside of performance?
I’ve always wanted to work at one of those restaurants where all the waiters pretend to be mean.
What’s your favorite song that Asterik is performing in Inglourious Basteriks?
A three-way tie: “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon, “Fireflies” by Owl City, and “U Remind Me” by Usher; but, really, they’re all great this time around.
What’s one thing people should know about this performance that they don’t already?
At each show, Asterik will build a fully functional, state-of-the-art time machine.
What’s the most degrading or thankless task you’ve ever had to do in performance?
You don’t know how many times I’ve had to kiss a girl on the mouth.
What would surprise people about Inglourious Basteriks?
We were all actually born within the confines of marriage.
What sort of emotions do you expect the audience to experience while watching Inglourious Basteriks?
I expect them to be personally offended and then moved to tears.
What else should people know about the show?
It’s pre-game friendly.
