This lady knows how to handle a baton.
Kali Maginity, a SESP freshman studying Learning and Organizational Change, has been spinning batons from the ripe age of three. Now she is taking the reins, following in the footsteps of her sister, who twirled for NU the past four years. With no coach, Kali makes up all of her own routines, improvising to perfection. Despite funny looks from bus drivers who mistake her batons as weapons, she is looking forward to twirling her way through college.
Kali describes her music taste as eclectic, but she’ll be the first to admit that she isn’t a huge fan of country. This clarinet player notes, “I have a musical appreciation for the technical merit of a song, but at the same time, I just like when I can dance and twirl to a good beat.”

“Double Vision”
3OH!3
This is my alarm clock song that makes me want to dance in the mornings.
“Breakeven (Falling to Pieces)”
The Script
The music and lyrics are so in sync, you end up feeling sad by the end.
“Boys Boys Boys”
Lady Gaga
My high school did this for a homecoming routine. Brings back memories.
“Curious and Quiet’
Jane Vinyl
Such a pretty song. When you are dancing, you can feel it pulsing.
“Back to December”
Taylor Swift
A good song for freshmen. Having to have left people from high school makes it hard to go back to the summer and reestablish those connections.
“Goodbye, Apathy”
One Republic
Most of their songs have a similar feel. They sing the way I pretend to sing.
“Only Girl (In the World)”
Rihanna
I can pretend it has a great message about feminism, but no. It is just a great song to dance to.
“All Over You”
The Spill Canvas
Everyone feels this way at some point. He misses someone he’s not over.
“The Call”
Regina Spektor
Such a compelling, motivating song. From the Chronicles of Narnia. Very G-Rated.
“Down”
Blink 182
Blink is an awesome band. Really pretty chord progression! Sorry if that was too nerdy.
