You know that rumor about NU you heard but never bothered to demystify? Yeah. We’ll do that. Introducing Debunked, our solution to your random questions.

Rumor: The national fraternity Delta Tau Delta (Delt) is whispering about returning to Northwestern and recolonizing a new chapter after having their charter revoked in 2007.

It seems that every year rumors swirl as to whether the infamous DTD will return to campus — whenever freshmen complain about lame parties, or people wonder if this will be the year Pike will be kicked out of their house, or nostalgic seniors and alumni recount past frat scandals. Ultimately, this seems like one of NU’s more persistent yet untrue pieces of gossip.

Intel decided to take it upon ourselves to finally put the matter to rest, so we called Delt’s national office to see what they had to say about a possible return to NU. And it turns out, this rumor may be more true than we thought.

“We’ve been having conversations with the university,” says David Sirey, director of growth for Delta Tau Delta, regarding the eventual return to campus. “Nothing is official at this point, but we’ve been in contact with the Greek life office about making that a possibility in the future.”

Sirey visited Northwestern earlier this year to meet with the Interfraternity Council and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, and he’s coming back to campus again in February to meet with the new IFC board. “Pretty much at this point in the game we need approval of the IFC and that’s part of why I’m going up to present our plan about what we can bring to campus,” Sirey says.

“Our intention is to come sometime in the next school year, but they have the final say. We’re guests of the university so we want to be respectful and make sure we have their full support.”

Delt was kicked off-campus several years ago due to a series of infractions including sending offensive emails to former Dean of Students Mary Desler. When contacted, both IFC and OFSL declined to comment on the likelihood that Delt would be given the green light to return.

“They seemed receptive,” Sirey says of the talks. “I don’t know if it’s anything they had really thought of before. We’ll cross our fingers.”

Status: Confirmed, Delt wants the Wildcats.
