In a sort of reverse freshman 15, NBN reports drunkorexia—a combination of binge drinking and limiting food intake—is the newest phenomenon sweeping campuses nationwide. The practice, termed “disordered eating,” results in quicker intoxication and more blackouts in the short term and the likelihood of nutritional deficiencies in the long run. While there’s no definitive information on the phenomenon at NU, the article sites a study of freshman at East Carolina University that identified 14 percent of subjects as “drunkorexics.” Half the subjects labeled drunkorexics limited food intake to get drunk faster, while the other half wanted to binge drink without gaining weight. But what about the drunchies (drunk + munchies)? With a 24-hour BK steps from campus, those 2 a.m. grease-induced cravings are hard to suppress.
