Organization just got easier with Google Voice service opening for students. The service will tie your phone to your Google Account, sending voicemails and voicemail transcriptions to your email, and allowing you to send free text messages from your computer. Participants will receive a new Google Voice number that they can forward all their other phone numbers to. “We’ve heard,” says Google’s official blog, that “college students really appreciate getting their voicemail to their email rather than listening to messages.” [Editor Serena Dai's Note: The transcripts aren't exactly perfect. Example of a recent voicemail transcript I got: "Bye. Yeah, the hey, i call you how you try it out of the hooked up with." Er, can't remember what that was supposed to say, but definitely not that...]

Invitations to the program went out to select people earlier in the fall, so some students may have already taken advantage of the program. CNET praised the program—and layed down it’s flaws, such as people calling you back on your caller ID rather than your Google number and voicemail issues.

Now, invitations to Google Voice will only be sent to people that have an email address ending in “.edu.” Hand it to Google for creating yet another distraction during lecture.
