Where oh where did he get that lavender colored vest?
In case you haven’t seen it yet, President Morton “Morty” Schapiro has his own Facebook fan page. Last Tuesday, the page’s status updated to declare a goal of 5,000 fans by the end of week. A week later, the page only has some 1,600 fans, but the range of fans is still impressive. From current students to alum from as far back as 1966, people are expressing Schapiro love on the page. The question is, who made this thing? And does Morty know? After careful Facebook stalking (my expertise), I found out that McCormick sophomore Chirag Gupta made the page.
“I think he’s kind of a badass,” Gupta says. “And I was bored.”
Gupta heard Schapiro talk in his dorm CCI at the beginning of the year. Ever since, Gupta’s been in email contact with him about various NU related topics. About a week and a half ago, he emailed Morty about something different—Facebook.
“He actually responded to me about it,” Gupta says. “He literally said his goal in life is to never be on Facebook. He left [the page] up to me.”
Gupta isn’t doing much with the fan page, and he doesn’t really have any plans to do much more. Regardless, Schapiro “doesn’t really care” if anything happens with it or not. “He said he prefers to meet students in person,” Gupta says.
As usual, Schapiro sounds like a chill dude. And modest, too! Schapiro has yet to e-mail blast his office to fan him on Facebook. When asked about the fan page, executive assistant at the office Judith Remington sounded confused and said she couldn’t comment. No worries, Judith. The Facebook fan love of students is what really matters anyway, right Morty?

See, these are the things I wonder about. Thanks for your fabulous detective work, Serena.
love it.
