Could University of Florida's new Facebook-based tutor matching system be more effective than NU's system?
Maybe Facebook can be an aid to studying rather than a distraction. The student government at the University of Florida has created a Facebook app called Tutor Matching Service to help students find tutors from the comfort of their dorm rooms. Students register as tutors on the application, set their own rates of charge (0-$50 per hour) and select what subject they would tutor. To go a step further, tutors can post pictures and videos of themselves, have ratings applied by users, and extend their services to the local high school.
This innovative solution cuts out the bureaucracy normally put in to services such as these. Right now, Northwestern offers NU Tutors as a service to students, paying it’s tutors $20 an hour. And while some private groups such as MyCat Enterprises tried to start their own, shifting the entire process onto Facebook might just be the key to getting the attention of the student body.
