There are 347 NCAA Division I basketball teams. As of last year’s NCAA Tournament, only five teams had never made it to the Big Dance:
Army
William and Mary
St. Francis (NY)
The Citadel
And of course, Northwestern
North Dakota State—in its first ever season of Division 1 basketball—did what NU hasn’t done in 71 years, made the tourney. more
NU Basketball Preview: How to be a good fan
You may have heard that Northwestern has a basketball team. They play at Welsh-Ryan Arena, which is that big building right next to Ryan Field (where the football team plays). Basketball season starts this week, which means tens of students will descend upon NU hoops’ hallowed grounds.
For those students who have yet to make the trek to the Welsh, I present to you some valuable tips on how to be a good Northwestern basketball fan. Obey them if you wish, but just know that if you are out of line at a game, I’m going to have to sock you in the mouth.
On with the tips: more
NU Basketball: Whatever could go wrong, does go wrong
UPDATE: Well, so much for all the optimism surrounding this team. Word broke earlier today that star forward Kevin Coble hurt his foot during practice yesterday. No timetable for his return has been announced by the NU Athletic Department.
Citing sources from high up in the Athletic Department, the blog spreadfarthefame reports Coble will be out at least 4-6 weeks. Coble is visiting a foot specialist Friday at which time we’ll learn more about his status. Anyway you look at it, if Coble is visiting a specialist, something is wrong.
Bottom line: this sucks.
NU Basketball Preview: The Coach
There’s no one I’d rather have coaching men’s basketball at NU than Bill Carmody. Coach Carmody has been a controversial figure over the years (there is a basketball blog whose name is dedicated to his firing), but the bottom line is that he’s the winningest coach in Northwestern’s sad basketball history. more
There was a time that basketball season could not come soon enough as NU’s football team flailed against the likes of Syracuse and Minnesota. Saturday’s victory over Iowa has made football relevant again, but that doesn’t mean we here at The Post aren’t fired up for Friday night when the Wildcats’ men’s basketball team begins their 2009-2010 campaign against the Northern Illinois Huskies at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
This week, we will preview different aspects of the season to get you ready for what could be a historic run for the historically-bad basketball program. Today we start with the Wildcats’ backcourt. more
Everyone’s upset about the salaries of investment bankers these days, but how about college presidents? 23 presidents of private colleges made more than $1 million this fiscal year, and the median compensation during the 2007-08 school year was $627,750. more
3-pointer on first base, and, oh yeah, Miami of Ohio!
Denmark report: “Ended up kissing the shit out of me”
Northwestern’s former three-point specialist Craig Moore is in the Netherlands playing for De Friesland Arts, a pro team in Europe. He is writing a blog that includes a mailbag and hilarity ensues. Moore’s stories from across the pond are hilarious, and his recent post about women in Evanston is great. An excerpt:
“It could have taken two minutes or two years but someway anyone that I had my eye on eventually ended up kissing the shit out of me at one point or another.” more
