Mid-year Assessments 2011: Most Surprising

Today, Intel looks back at what caught us all off-guard, and what got us talking, for better or worse. This year was full of great surprises—at least in terms of coming out of left field: the Senior class got one hell of a commencement speaker (so long as he shows up), ASG is slimming down, and NU even got some Nobel recognition. These and others among the biggest surprises of the past year are in today’s slideshow.

The week of rush (part 2) and frat raps

The week started with recruitment still in full swing. We sifted through the university archives to find the most notorious frat fucks ups—just some casual reading to send along to your parents after you drop the bombshell that you’re now a pledge. But rush was so last week. This was the week of the glorious rise to fame of Chet Haze—son of Tom and hip-hop extraordinaire. more

Wildcats mutter under their breath about contract extension for Carmody

1/13/1112:17 pmBy Shiraz Ahmed 0 Comments

After Bill Carmody’s announcement of a multi-year contract extension, some Wildcat fans are left grumbling in the oh-so-telling realm of college basketball blogs. Eamonn Brennan of ESPN outlines the complaints wonderfully, with only minimal bashing of our program (Best quote: “Hey, it’s Northwestern, a team that has the words “4 NIT APPEARANCES” on a banner in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Yes, this is true, and yes, it might be the saddest banner in college sports.”) After 11 years with NU, Carmody has improved the program, but has yet to net us a tourney. Essentially, fans are treating Carmody as that first boyfriend or girlfriend. It was sweet while it lasted darling, but, hey, we’ve got to move on.

Basketball coach signs “multi-year” contract extension

1/11/111:23 pmBy Jeffrey Cattel 0 Comments

Men’s basketball coach Bill Carmody will stay put in Evanston, at least for the next few years. Northwestern’s athletic department dubbed it a “multi-year deal,” and the Trib reports the contract involves a two-year extension. With two consecutive appearances in the postseason National Invitation Tournament and a 10-4 record so far this year, the news isn’t a surprise. But we’d like to know if Carmody’s new contract includes a raise.

The website Charity Navigator reports Carmody received more than $1.1. million in 2007 — back when NU still struggled to put together an above .500 season. At the time, Carmody also had a career record of 95-110, earning him the title of “greatest gap between performance and pay” from the website. Don’t let the Living Wage Campaign get wind of this.

Well, it was fun while it lasted

When an elderly woman describes your college basketball team as “embarrassing,” that’s, well, embarrassing.

If there is any benefit to supporting a perennially awful basketball team, it’s that you don’t have to experience devastating losses that kill postseason hopes. The football team has had its fair share (if I may digress: 1995 Miami (OH), 1996 Rose Bowl, 2000 Iowa, 2004 Hawaii, 2005 Sun Bowl, 2006 New Hampshire, 2007 Duke, 2008 Indiana, 2008 Alamo Bowl, 2010 Outback Bowl–to name a few). more

The time for cautious optimism is over. After watching the Wildcats almost destroy their tournament hopes against Texas-Pan American, I declared the worst to be over. After the disaster in Columbus, I took solace in the win over Illinois. But now, with 10 games left until Selection Sunday, it’s time to face reality: If Northwestern wants to appear on an tournament bracket for the first time in school history, they are going to have to step it up—and fast. more

NU road struggles continue in nail-biting loss in Minnesota

Last night’s game against Minnesota looked, at times, like the ‘Cats win over Michigan in Ann Arbor a couple weeks back. On the road against a more athletic team, NU fought back from behind, but unlike against Michigan, it was too little, too late, as they fell to the Golden Gophers, 65-61. more

‘Cats can’t build off Purdue win, walloped by Ohio State

There’s something you should know about Northwestern. While they may have finally gotten over the hump this season when it comes to winning close games, and may even reach the summit and make it to the Big Dance, consistency is not their strong suit.

After Saturday’s marquee victory over Purdue, the ‘Cats laid an egg in Columbus on Tuesday night, falling to the #25 Buckeyes 76-56. The game was over two minutes in, and we can only hope that NU uses this as motivation to beat the Illini on Saturday. Onto the grades. more

‘Cats can’t make grades in failed effort to upset the Badgers

Maybe it was too much to ask for Northwestern to beat Wisconsin in both football and basketball. NU will have to settle for a win on the gridiron this year and an upset on the hardwood last year. (Unless they find a way to win in Madison—doubtful.) For anyone who didn’t make it to the game—which is absolutely unacceptable, especially when Northwestern hosts a top 25 team—or anyone that wants to relive the heartbreak, here is yesterday’s report card. more

In the history books, Northwestern sits right next to the NCAA Tournament—but not in the way they would like. The closest the ‘Cats have been to the Big Dance was when the first tournament was held at the original Patten Gym (since demolished to build Tech). more
