Psych majors face sparse job market

You graduate with a Northwestern degree and expect the prestigious piece of paper you’ve paid $200,000 for will get you a job — but not so fast. The Wall Street Journal collected data regarding the most popular majors, median salaries, and the unemployment rates for each. According to the data, clinical psychology is the most unemployable major, with an unemployment rate of 19.5 percent. In fact, the psychology job market is pretty desolate, in general; four different types of psychology made the top 11 most unemployable majors list. Nevertheless, psychology is a very popular major here at Northwestern. Journalism, theatre, and communication majors have unemployment rates hovering around 7 percent. Even music majors will have a better chance of finding a job, with only a 5 percent unemployment rate. Needless to say, engineers will fare much better, with half the unemployment rate and double the average salaries. But this is a school made up of over-achievers and students who pride themselves on being above average. We’ll beat the statistics, right?
