The week where Tisdahl went soft on marijuana, hard on brothels

It’s the final week before the onslaught of midterms and in an effort to ignore the inevitable, Northwestern students are turning a blind eye and focusing their attention on preparations for this weekend’s football game against Michigan. To help you get ready, we unveiled a pregame playlist and showed you how much your friends at state schools pay to see their team play. The week began, however, by reliving the moments we may have liked to forget from the weekend’s parties (including crying about The Lion King), and then took a sociological look at our favorite dive bar, TKOE, in “How to NU.” more

The key to a good offense is a good defense. Using that logic, we’ve decided that the key to a good pregame is good music. more

Persa to return to NU football Saturday

9/27/114:17 pmBy Sophia Ahn 0 Comments

Coach Fitz announced this morning that NU’s star quarterback, Dan Persa, is expected to play in Saturday’s game against Illinois. So does this mean that he’s still in the running for the Heisman trophy because, well, he’s actually playing? Probably not. But we’d still like to get our hands on some of those PersaStrong dumb bells.

Intel weighs in on PersaStrong swag

Dan Persa, NU’s star quarterback and candidate for the Heisman Trophy, has had his name branded on some swanky merch lately. From towering over Chicago on a billboard to having his name emblazoned on seven-pound dumbbells, Persa’s the most attention NU has received since we discovered bisexuals last month. We thought we’d jump on the bandwagon with our own ideas for some PersaStrong swag. From the ridiculous to the semi-realistic, check out our picks after the jump. more

With new contract, Fitz’s salary places him in the middle of the pack among Big Ten coaches

While Northwestern refused to release details of Coach Fitz’s new contract, which runs through 2020, sources told the Tribune the deal includes a new salary of $1.8 million per year for the Wildcats’ head coach. That’s a 240 percent increase over Fitz’s last reported yearly salary of $750,000. With such a mind boggling increase, we decided to see how his new salary stacks up against the competition—other Big Ten football coaches. The stats after the jump. more

One sophomore attempts to stealthily bring flask to football game, still caught by cops

Flash back to Fall Quarter. It’s the first home football game of the season, and I willingly wake up at the ungodly hour of 7:30 on a Saturday to begin pregamming. But unlike last year, I formulate a plan to ensure a steady level of drunkenness throughout the game. more

Fitz welcomes 17 new ‘Cats on Signing Day

2/5/102:38 pmBy Kevin Fishbain 0 Comments

It was a ho-hum signing day for Northwestern, relative to what you might have seen around the country on ESPN. Starting at 6am, recruits faxed in their signed letters of intent to play for the ‘Cats, and by noon all 17 had been collected. There were no last minute commitments or de-commitments, and no high school senior was surrounded with cameras deciding whether or not to put on a Northwestern hat.

Northwestern did not sign a 4-star player like they did last year with offensive lineman Patrick Ward, and they didn’t get many commits from the state of Illinois like they did in 2008 (only one this year, defensive lineman Chance Carter—from Evanston).

ESPN Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg ranked NU’s class as the 8th best in the Big Ten. Rivals.com ranked them 9th in the conference and 77th in the country (Auburn, who beat the ‘Cats in the Outback Bowl had a class ranked 4th). more

Political Science, BIP ’09

It is with my deepest sympathy that I send my regrets on the closing of one of Northwestern’s greatest institutions. After years of providing the hops to countless students, crazy locals, drunken frat boys, and the entire Northwestern football team, the famed 1800 Club has closed its doors.
