Fitz welcomes 17 new ‘Cats on Signing Day

2/5/102:38 pmBy Kevin Fishbain 0 Comments

It was a ho-hum signing day for Northwestern, relative to what you might have seen around the country on ESPN. Starting at 6am, recruits faxed in their signed letters of intent to play for the ‘Cats, and by noon all 17 had been collected. There were no last minute commitments or de-commitments, and no high school senior was surrounded with cameras deciding whether or not to put on a Northwestern hat.

Northwestern did not sign a 4-star player like they did last year with offensive lineman Patrick Ward, and they didn’t get many commits from the state of Illinois like they did in 2008 (only one this year, defensive lineman Chance Carter—from Evanston).

ESPN Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg ranked NU’s class as the 8th best in the Big Ten. Rivals.com ranked them 9th in the conference and 77th in the country (Auburn, who beat the ‘Cats in the Outback Bowl had a class ranked 4th). more

Let us never forget the fish bowls sorority girls went crazy over.

Political Science, BIP ’09

It is with my deepest sympathy that I send my regrets on the closing of one of Northwestern’s greatest institutions. After years of providing the hops to countless students, crazy locals, drunken frat boys, and the entire Northwestern football team, the famed 1800 Club has closed its doors.

Northwestern victory sends seniors, fans into jubilation

11/23/094:45 pmBy Wade Askew 1 Comment

Saturday’s win reminded us all why we’re fans. It legitimized us for putting up with a disappointing 5-4 start to the season that included an embarrassing loss to Syracuse and a painful conference-opening defeat to Minnesota. It showed us why we wake up early for all those 11 am kickoffs and make all the noise that a small student section can muster in a stadium that sits half-empty more often than not. Because in the end, it can be a freakin’ blast. more

Badgers go for 2 and the win on the road and fail to convert when John Clay is tackled by senior Corey Wootton at the goal line. more

“We’re not going to Detroit! We’re not going to Detroit!”

This was my first reaction when Sherrick McManis’ game-clinching interception was upheld by officials in Northwestern’s 21-16 win over rival Illinois. Moments later Brendan Smith would be hoisting an awkward hat-shaped trophy as a small contingent of purple sang the fight song and reveled in a third straight victory over the perennially overrated Illini. more

Outrage from Illinois fans

11/16/0910:32 amBy Stephen Woldenberg 0 Comments

Let’s just be thankful Pat Fitzgerald is Northwestern’s head coach. In his fourth season at the helm, he has NU heading to two-straight bowl games for only the second time in program history. No small feat at Northwestern. He’s changed the culture. Now, winning is expected, not dreamed about.

Downstate though, its another story. The Orange and Blue have big issues on their hands, much to the joy of many NU fans, particularly Illini-hater and co-editor of The Post, Kevin Fishbain. As Aaron Morse wrote last Friday, Illinois is a bad football team, and Ron Zook is an even worse coach. more

Illinois is a bad football team

11/13/092:27 pmBy Aaron Morse 2 Comments

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini is the most underachieving team in the Big Ten. They have potential first round picks on both sides of the ball, yet they have won a grand total of three games this season.

Illinois’ penchant for underachieving is a typical characteristic of a Ron Zook-coached team. more

PLAYER(S) TO WATCH:
Illinois’ Gobstopper: Sophomore RB Mikel LeShoure

A season ago LeShoure brought new meaning to the “Fightin’” in Fightin’ Illini when he tussled with senior WR Jeff Cumberland on Nov. 1, 2008. Much to his misfortune, the fight did not finish in favor of LeShoure as the 6-0, 225-lb tailback broke his jaw requiring surgery to wire-shut his mouth for six weeks. Well, that’s one way to shut up the loquacious yet talented Centennial High School product. more
