Ohio State, Michigan nickel and dime students for tickets

When you pay private school prices, you expect some perks. Maybe it’s the state-of-the-art facilities, the smaller class sizes, and, oh yeah, the allure of “free” football. We can’t help but wonder if students would be as enthusiastic about our mediocre team if these tickets cost $250 a year, like they do for Michigan students. This week in Number Crunch: We break down which teams in the Big Ten demand the highest prices. Check out the graphic and stats after the jump. more

Well, it was fun while it lasted

When an elderly woman describes your college basketball team as “embarrassing,” that’s, well, embarrassing.

If there is any benefit to supporting a perennially awful basketball team, it’s that you don’t have to experience devastating losses that kill postseason hopes. The football team has had its fair share (if I may digress: 1995 Miami (OH), 1996 Rose Bowl, 2000 Iowa, 2004 Hawaii, 2005 Sun Bowl, 2006 New Hampshire, 2007 Duke, 2008 Indiana, 2008 Alamo Bowl, 2010 Outback Bowl–to name a few). more

Following Tuesday’s developments in “the case of the mean prosecutors v. the plucky journalism students,” Gawker joined the list of media outlets that have covered the ongoing investigation—but, in true Gawker style, with a twist. For author Adrian Chen, the most surprising part of Tuesday’s subpoena hearing wasn’t the allegation that female students “flirted” with sources, or paid a source $60 that he later spent on crack cocaine. It was the prosecutors’ argument that a student “motivated by something other than a noble search for the Truth, with a capital T, underscored thrice and written in fancy cursive” is something scandalous. After all, Chen writes, “The idea that journalists are objective truth-seekers died out with, like, Walter Cronkite’s ‘And that’s the way it is.’ We’ve all got an angle these days.” [Gawker] more

Another Saturday making us wonder: “What if?”

It’s the most painful phrase in sports. In many ways, it’s easier to deal with getting flat-out manhandled by a superior opponent. But when you walk away from a game thinking about what could have been, helplessly playing out an alternate scenario in your head that could have allowed your team to win, there could not be a more frustrating or demoralizing way to spend a Saturday. more

Crazy things happen on Halloween, this year: an NU victory?

What: Northwestern vs. #12 Penn State
Where: Ryan Field
When: 3:30 pm kickoff
How to watch: By being at the game, no excuses this time-afternoon kickoff gives you plenty of time to tailgate and get in costume. Now, onto the predictions. more

Penn State sucks because they single-handedly destroyed the Big Ten. I’m serious. They caused the Big Ten to have 11 teams when they joined following the 1992 season. That’s just a disgrace. The Big Ten has some of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world (not including Iowa), and all of a sudden it looks like the people who named the conference can’t count! more

What did you hear from students after the Indiana game?
Everyone was being real supportive saying it was great to watch and awesome to be apart of. After the game I found out it was the biggest deficit NU has ever come back from. Everyone said congratulations and that it was a crazy game.

Did anyone tell you they left early?
(Laughs) No, no one told me they left early. more

Illinois is still very bad

There were no upsets last week in the Big Ten, but rather a wild finish in East Lansing as Iowa continued their mediocre climb to the top of the national rankings. Ohio State and Penn State are back on track, and Illinois should just quit now before things get worse. more

After an exciting 29-28 come-from-behind win over Indiana, not even the loonies on the wildcatreport.com football message board could come up with reasons why this team is doomed. (Nope, not even anything about the horrific start to the game). And quite frankly, the spirits of the NU fan base should be high heading into the game of the year against Penn State this Saturday at Ryan Field. There’s finally some positive energy surrounding this team. So, after weeks of ridicule, I actually agree with the posters this time. more

I’ve gone to Big Ten Media Day the past two summers, an event where coaches and players come to Chicago in July and talk about the upcoming season. Each time, a common question involving the Big Ten’s lack of prestige is asked of the coaches. They all shrug it off and ignore statements that the SEC is superior to the Big Ten. Well, this week taught us that the Big Ten has fallen significantly from the national map. With the Iowa Hawkeyes as far-and-away the best team in the league, it’s a shame Northwestern chose this year to falls short of expectations.
