Even the most optimistic of ‘Cats fans came into this week with anything less than total confidence. With a 1-2 record in the Big Ten, it seemed clear that for Northwestern to stay alive in the tournament discussion, they needed to take one of their next two games against No. 16 Wisconsin or No. 6 Purdue. Once Trevon Hughes willed the Badgers to victory by nailing three three-pointers in a row, it seemed as though NU was destined to drop to the bottom of the Big Ten rankings. more

Northwestern basketball fans may finally have some reason to rejoice. Cats fans stormed the court following the Cats 72-64 victory over No. 6 Purdue. The mad dash celebrated Northwestern’s first win over a top-10 team in more than 15 years. Despite their 2-3 record in the Big Ten, the Cats overall record of 13-4 bodes well for a potential trip to the NCAA tournament, a first for the school. [The Daily] more

It’s cold. It’s snowy. For the freshman girls who have braved the weather and spent hours on the sorority quad, tonight is the night. Good to finally see the Daily noticed rush was going on. Nothing like a survey story to capture 150 years of mood. [The Daily] more

Week 10 of the college football season ended up being a huge turning point for Northwestern. In addition to their upset victory over Iowa, the ‘Cats got some help from around the league, putting NU in position to reach a sunny bowl game. more

Endowments, vegans, and bowl agreements

Looks like the recession is slowly coming to an end––at least for NU. Over the past eight months, the University’s endowment grew 12.7 percent to $5.8 billion as of September 31, 2009. But it’s not all good news: The endowment increase comes mainly from cost-cutting and budget decreases. [NBN] more

O-Line: B-
The offensive line gave up only two sacks to a Purdue defense that played exceptionally, considering its poor field position all day. They also held up despite being on the field for 36 minutes. And while the Cats couldn’t muster more than 90 yards on the ground, the O-line did a good enough job to keep drives moving, especially in the second half.

QB: A-
Mike Kafka finally found his legs, huh? The flash NU fans have wanted to see since last year’s Minnesota game showed up again, as Kafka rushed for 39 yards and the winning touchdown. Kafka went turnover-free against the Boilermakers, and passed for 224 yards on 28 of 44 attempts. Even as the Cats seemed unable to punch it in the end zone all game long, Kafka showed poise at the helm, and coolly directed the game-winning drive, plus a 2-point conversion. more

After a come-from-behind 27-21 victory over Purdue on Saturday, Northwestern fans gloriously celebrated their team’s victory at local establishments across the country. In the process, they forgot to criticize the team on wildcatreport.com! So, for today’s Message Board Ridicule, I shift directions and head over to GoldandBlack.com, the Purdue rivals.com message board. Here, Purdue fans vent their frustration with Danny Hope’s coaching so far this season. In a thread entitled, “Fire Danny Hope TONIGHT” Purdue fans display their disgust with the Coach Hope’s hopeless regime. more

Purdue fumbles away crazy game to NU

Well, that was fun. After two consecutive weeks of the Cardiac Cats falling flat on their faces under the familiar weight of a tight fourth quarter, Fitz and the boys pulled one out. Following an exceedingly bizarre game that was literally fumbled away by the Boilermakers, I’m not quite sure what to think.

But hey, 3-2 certainly feels a whole lot better than 2-3, so my glass is half-full. In that spirit, let’s look at the best Saturday had to offer. more

Each week, Aaron Morse will tell you why Northwestern’s opponent sucks.

Purdue has exactly one worthwhile player in running back Ralph Bolden, and he gets most of his hype thanks to a monster game against Toledo. I could run for 100 yards against freaking Toledo. I’ll give Bolden and Purdue credit, they are better than Colorado, who somehow managed to lose to that same Toledo team. more

“That’s typical Northwestern”

Each week, contributing writer Andrew Gothelf will gauge the student body’s level of apathy heading into Saturday’s football game.

If Northwestern plays a football game in Purdue and nobody watches it, does it still count in the Big Ten standings?

After the Wildcats blew a fourth-quarter lead to Minnesota for their second straight loss, thus dropping Northwestern to a 2-2 record, you could feel the air being let out of the balloon. The students were there. They were loud and wearing purple. The freshmen might not have known the words to the fight song, but they knew to cheer on 3rd down. more
