NU grad Stephen Colbert to receive honorary degree at commencement

5/5/112:46 pmBy Brandon Samuels 0 Comments

Wildcat alum Stephen Colbert will receive an honorary degree from Northwestern when he speaks at this year’s graduation commencement on June 17. We know it’s standard practice to bestow honorary degrees upon distinguished commencement speakers. But what does this say about the NU degree Colbert worked four long years to receive? Other honorary degree recipients this year include opera singer Jessye Norman, computer science expert Barbara Liskov, and death penalty and international criminal law scholar William Schabas. The university has yet to announce what kind of honorary degree Colbert will receive, but we hope it’s in “truthiness.”

Mid-year Assessments 2011: Most Surprising

Today, Intel looks back at what caught us all off-guard, and what got us talking, for better or worse. This year was full of great surprises—at least in terms of coming out of left field: the Senior class got one hell of a commencement speaker (so long as he shows up), ASG is slimming down, and NU even got some Nobel recognition. These and others among the biggest surprises of the past year are in today’s slideshow.

The week of big announcements and Brothel-gate

1/28/114:44 pmBy Buzzard editors 1 Comment

The week started off with two big university announcements: a new VP of student affairs and, oh yeah, Stephen Colbert as this year’s commencement speaker. But no one was talking about Colbert after the Daily ran an article about the city’s plans to step up enforcement of the brothel law. And the student body quickly mobilized in outrage. Hey, at least we were banding together as a community. Morty should be proud. more

Colbert to speak at commencement

1/24/113:26 pmBy Shiraz Ahmed 0 Comments

In what is quickly becoming a day of surprising announcements, comedian and NU alum Stephen Colbert (School of Comm. ’86) has been named as the 2011 commencement speaker. Famous for his Comedy Central show The Colbert Report and his role on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show, Colbert is a graduate of NU’s theater program and was recently profiled by Northwestern magazine. Colbert also has already penned numerous speeches for other universities, from Knox College to Princeton University. It will be interesting to see whether he will give NU’s speech as the never-say-die conservative talking head (a personality he’s used even to testify before Congress), or as the out-of-character Colbert who rarely makes public appearances. The last time Colbert played a significant part in NU traditions was as grand marshal of the 2006 Northwestern Homecoming Parade. Northwestern’s 2011 Commencement will take place at 10:30 a.m on June 17, at Northwestern’s Ryan Field, and tickets will surely be hard to come by.
