Adam Lambert is back, gearing up to sit on pop throne

5/17/1210:00 amBy Stephen Autar 21 Comments

Pop music, especially of the trashy variety, has been a woman’s game as of late, but there’s one boy not named Justin who’s planning on infiltrating – and he very well could be successful. Adam Lambert, of American Idol fame, released his second album, Trespassing, on Tuesday and it’s a heavyweight pop record to be reckoned with. It’s just as addictive and exciting as anything our fave girls have been releasing this past year. more

Nicki v. Rihanna: naughty, nautical, and natural

5/3/1212:00 pmBy Kyle King 0 Comments

Recently, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna both released hot new music videos. Both music videos show off their hot bods, a batshit crazy dance party, and luscious landscapes. Nicki and Rihanna proved that they are both femme fatales like Brit, but which one of them did it better? more

Havana Brown: not sure if DJ or just another poptart

Major Lazer on Saturday and Steve Aoki allegedly doing Dillo Day means electronic dance music should be running rampant through your minds. Actually, even without these two facts I’d be surprised if EDM wasn’t, what with every Top 40 popstar tapping into the genre for the past five years. Which is precisely what makes Havana Brown so different: she’s an Australian EDM DJ who is breaking into the pop scene with her single, “We Run the Night” which includes a guest appearance by Trashy Pop’s favorite rapper, Pitbull. Yep, those are all the right ingredients for a Grammy-worthy song.

Jenny and Onika feed pop stereotypes, fail to move forward

4/3/1211:00 amBy Stephen Autar 0 Comments

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, amirite? That resounding “yes!” you didn’t just hear was the sound of practically every pop star on Top 40 radio agreeing heartily. Pop isn’t always the most innovative or substantive genre, and it gets harder to defend my love when my chanteuses keep churning out songs that sound exactly the same. The most recent offenders: Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj, of course. Jenny from the Block’s new single, “Dance Again,” was released April 2 and Our Lady Minaj’s second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is out April 3. This would be exciting news, except for the fact that both projects hearken back to notable records we’ve already heard from these ladies. more

Bieber’s “Boyfriend” is hostile and unsettling

3/27/1211:00 amBy Benjamin Myers 0 Comments

Imagine a person aggressively whispering, “If I was your boyfriend I’d never let you go, I can take you places you never been before.”  It’s terrifying right?  Reads like a prelude to sexual assault.  It becomes even more jarring when you realize you’re listening to a Justin Bieber song, his new single, “Boyfriend.” more

Katy Perry rips off Rihanna in new video trailer

11/8/119:00 amBy Stephen Autar 0 Comments

Katy Perry just revealed the teaser for her upcoming music video, “The One That Got Away,” and while I can’t admit to being a fan of Miss Kitty Purry, I have to say this teaser reduced me to tears. It just evoked such strong emotions. Yes, it’s true. I spent the entire 36-second teaser laughing. more

Justin Bieber makes a hipster Christmas anti-carol

10/28/1111:30 amBy Stephen Autar 1 Comment

As the messiah of tween girls everywhere, Justin Bieber has a big responsibility: do nothing of legitimate worth and still make prepubescent females moist. Pretty standard popstar agenda. But Biebs has gone against the grain with his latest release “Mistletoe” and transformed himself into the ultimate hipster. more

Britney Spears releases new single/work of art

10/20/1111:30 amBy Stephen Autar 4 Comments

The latest Britney Spears single, “Criminal,” is a bit like that drink the sloppy fratstar bartender gave you at that one party: at first you don’t like it. It’s this weird concoction you’re not used to. But as you drink more and more, you start to warm up to it until, hey, it’s not so bad anymore! In fact, you like it. more
