Get in a Trance this Weekend

5/11/1210:00 amBy Andrew Cho 0 Comments

Trance, at its worst, sounds like twelve-year-old European geeks making music to play Warcraft to. Trance, at its, best, sounds like Above and Beyond.

Swedish House Mafia. Skrillex. David Guetta. All household names at this point. But you may not know too much about A&B. Known to be one of the best live electronic acts worldwide and placed at #5 on DJ Mag’s (in)famous Top 100 DJs List, Above and Beyond has consistently headlined Ultra and EDC the past couple years. This Saturday, the group hits the Congress, along with trance superstars Cosmic Gate and stellar up-and-comer Mat Zo. For only $35, this concert is a steal. In LA, for example, Above and Beyond concerts sell out within ten minutes of being posted and are sold for a hundred a pop from outside sources. Yeah, the Congress sucks (snappy security guards and guido-bro muscle-men galore!), but the venue’s a small price to pay for a borderline-religious experience. Cheat on Burger King this weekend with swanky fine dining

2/17/1210:00 amBy Jade Chen 0 Comments

After gorging yourself with the piles of discounted post-Valentine’s Day sweets scattered across your desk, it’s time to class it up and indulge in style. Get a taste of fine dining at this year’s Chicago Restaurant Week, an annual event in which 200-plus restaurants offer prix fixe menus for as low as $22. With restaurants ranging from Michelin star recipients to casual family-style joints, Restaurant Week provides the perfect opportunity to get your mastication on. Binge on a fancy three or four-course meal at some of Chicago’s swankiest restaurants without waking up the next morning with nothing but a flaccid wallet and a heart full of regret. Only $33 for sautéed foie gras, lobster risotto, and a chocolate soufflé? It won’t replace the dirt cheap goodness of $5 chicken fries, but I’ll take it. Spend this weekend at an anti-Valentine’s Day cabaret

2/10/1212:30 pmBy Jade Chen 0 Comments

if you find yourself lonely and depressed this Valentine’s Day, as most of us probably will given Northwestern’s lamentable (read: nonexistent) dating scene, what better way to temporarily escape your own misery than by ridiculing that of others? Cheer yourself up at Letters/X, an anti-Valentine’s Day cabaret that exposes the problems that plague real couples in relationships. Composed entirely of letters, emails, texts, Facebook posts and other mediums submitted by the public, the show deals with anything from heartbreak to weird fetishes. Let’s be real: Love is overrated, but so is complaining about how overrated it is. So this year, do yourself a favor. Ditch the “Fuck Yeah, We’re Single”-type parties and the sourpuss attitude, and head to the Apollo Theater for an evening of entertainment that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Celebrate a belated Diwali with Zamin

11/11/1112:41 pmBy Junnie Kwon 0 Comments

Behold the power of Hindustani vocals and tanpuras tonight with a Northwestern band as it performs at a Diwali celebration at UChicago. “Zamin” means “earth” in Hindi, and that pretty much sums up the concept of the group’s music. Completely acoustic, Zamin harmonizes classical and Indian instruments to produce a modern take on traditional Indian music. Imagine an Indian version of good ol’ country, and you’ll get their song “Dance with Me”. Instrumentally the group includes strings, classical guitar, two percussionists, and various traditional Indian instruments. Learn to pronounce Diwali like di-vah-lee, and head to the southside for Zamin’s weekend show. more

Head downtown for a lavish fashion show

Can the likes of Borris Powell, Lara Miller, and Eva Pazola compare to household name designers such as Donna Karan or Marc Jacobs? Have you even heard of Borris Powell? Neither have the bored housewives attending Fashion Focus, Chicago’s pretend-New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. But we know they’ll fake some oohs and aahs for the Chicago-based designers’ collections. more
